Red deer behavioural response to hiking activity: a study using camera traps

چکیده

With increasing levels of outdoor recreation activities, consequences for wildlife through interactions with recreationists are highly variable. Behavioural changes in one potential consequence recreationists. In ungulate populations, vigilance and flight responses well-known antipredator behaviours, an increase their level indicates a more intense stress which, ultimately, can have animal fitness. Scotland, the geographical distribution red deer (Cervus elaphus) overlaps greatly areas used popular activities such as hill walking. this piece research, we studied time allocation, vigilance, behaviours near hiking path using camera traps. We positioned cameras transects at different distances (25, 75, 150 m) from recorded activity automated people counter. Red behaviour was categorized photo analysis (1) no response (e.g. feeding resting), (2) vigilant (i.e. upright head position), (3) response. also investigated demographic variables (group size sex) direction movement relative to trail. generalised linear mixed models analyse relation distance track, activity, day, demographic, environmental variables. did not find or activity. These results suggest that deer, our study area, habituated presence hikers may spatially avoid close instead displaying cost-intensive behaviour).

Few studies, however, have documented selection on behavioural responses that increase individual...

StudyCapture myopathy in red deer and wild goat

This syndrome is a shock-like hyper metabolic myopathy triggered in susceptible animals by stress. Capture myopathy (C.M.) is a commonly occurring condition in mammals following trapping and transportation. In this case 12 to 24 hours after transportation of red deer (Cevus elaphus) and wild goats (Capra ibex) clinical signs such as: muscular tremor, ataxia, recumbency, hyperthermia, tachyca...

Red deer synchronise their activity with close neighbours

Models of collective animal behaviour frequently make assumptions about the effects of neighbours on the behaviour of focal individuals, but these assumptions are rarely tested. One such set of assumptions is that the switch between active and inactive behaviour seen in herding animals is influenced by the activity of close neighbours, where neighbouring animals show a higher degree of behaviou...

A Proposed Simple Teleradiology System Using a Digital Camera

Background & Aims: Teleradiology as an efficient way for avoiding unnecessary transfer of patients to special medical centers requires the images with digital format. However, in some developing countries, including Iran, imaging is being done using non digital devices. In such cases, changing analog images into digital ones can solve the problem. The method which is nowadays used for digita...

HYBRIDISATION BETWEEN RED DEER (Cervus elaphus) AND OTHER DEER SPECIES

Red deer (R) are the predominant species of farmed deer in New Zealand. There is considerable interest in hybridisation with other deer species to improve growth rate and possibly alter the breeding season of the progeny. Analysis of gestation lengths indicates that the progeny of Canadian wapiti (CW) or CW x R deer have gestation lengths intermediate between the parental strains but the progen...
